Through the VoiceOver project, this spring ADPARE has trained 4 survivors from Uganda, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Nepal to become peer mentors and activists in their communities. The intensive one-week training covered emotional support, trauma-informed care, selfcare, setting boundaries, cultural competence, and legal and safety considerations.

“I want to help people in need in our community,” said one participant.

“It’s difficult to approach those in tough situations, especially domestic workers under strict control. Often, the only place we can reach them is at church.” The participants pinpointed communication hurdles, the absence of tailored services for migrant women at risk, isolation and difficulties in recognizing trafficked individuals as the most prevalent barriers. These discussions were crucial in preparing them to navigate and overcome the complex issues they may face as peermentors.
